Mykolaiv has started updating public transport stop announcements to reflect the new names.

According to Yuriy Smetana, director of Mykolaivelectrotrans, the company has already prepared updated voice announcements for all 10 trolleybus and 6 tram routes. From now on, all announcements will be made in one voice, MikVisti reports.

According to the manager, the audio is being updated gradually, as each vehicle needs to be rewritten with a flash drive with new audio files. In addition, due to the outdated equipment of the trams, this process requires additional preparation. However, the first positive feedback from passengers is already coming in.

Earlier, Mykolaiv residents drew attention to the fact that some stops were still announced by the old names. Iryna Markina-Badyul, a resident of the city, left a request at the city council's contact center, noting that the Arkasivska and Zakhystnykiv Mykolaiv stops are announced by their old names.

Yuriy Smetana thanked the citizens for their concern and said that the new voiceover was developed jointly with Volodymyr Alekseev, who organizes cultural events in Mykolaiv. He also emphasized that this process is part of the city's cultural transformation.

Since July 27, 2023, 3,135 place names have been renamed in southern Ukraine and 90 monuments have been dismantled. In Mykolaiv region, 1,137 place names were renamed and 9 monuments were dismantled.

Discussions on renaming Mykolaiv's place names began in May. The purpose of this was to involve members of the public in reviewing and proposing new names for the toponymy objects covered by this law.

In September, a documentary was made about the new street names in Mykolaiv. The video tells the story of Karl Knorr, the first director of the Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory, an innovator and compiler of star charts. Mayakovskoho Street in Ternivka was renamed in his honor.
