The Russian army attacked Kherson's railroad infrastructure, damaging the station and one of the railroad cars, but causing no casualties. Trains continue to run, and traffic has resumed after an hour-long delay.
This was reported by the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia.
On the morning of May 16, Russian troops again shelled Kherson's railway infrastructure. At the time of the attack, there were passengers and employees at the station, but they all managed to get down to the shelter, so no one was injured.
The shelling damaged the building of the railway station, smashing windows and destroying some of the workplaces in the office premises. One of the cars of a passenger train also sustained minor damage.
The press service emphasized that despite the shelling, the train continued its route with a delay of about an hour after the danger was over. Other trains are also running according to schedule.
In the first year of the full-scale war, Ukrzaliznytsia impressed not only Ukrainians but also foreign partners and even the enemy. Despite constant shelling, mass evacuations, and hostilities, trains continued to run, which did not go unnoticed by the European media. Thus began the most unpredictable and difficult year in the country's history for Ukrainian railroaders - a year when railroad companies from around the world expressed their respect for Ukrzaliznytsia's work in the midst of military chaos.
This is not the only infrastructure facility that has suffered from Russian terror. After the occupation and massive shelling, the Kherson seaport suffered large-scale destruction - machinery, infrastructure, boats and other equipment were destroyed. However, despite numerous appeals, the government has not yet agreed with the concessionaire on a plan to restore it.
Part of the territory of the Kherson port, located on the left bank of the Dnipro River, is still under the control of the Russian occupiers. Additional damage to the infrastructure was caused by a large-scale flood caused by the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant in June 2023.
