More and more Ukrainians are turning to laboratories to find out their ancestry, confirm their relationship, or check for health risks. A DNA test is not only about paternity, but also about a range of medical and genetic research.
What are the types of DNA tests?
The following types of tests are most commonly performed in Ukraine:
- The paternity or maternity test is the most common. It allows you to establish a biological relationship with great accuracy.
- Genealogical (ancestry) - analysis of ethnic origin and family history on the paternal or maternal side.
- Medical genetic - determines genetic predisposition to diseases, reaction to medications, and food tolerance.
- Identification - used in forensic science or in the search for missing persons.
- For pregnant women (prenatal DNA test) - a safe test to detect genetic pathologies of the unborn child.
How is the DNA test done?
It is easy to do the test: you need to contact the laboratory or order a kit for taking samples at home. The kit will include instructions, sterile cotton swabs, and an envelope for returning the samples. In addition, a specialist can take the sample in medical centers.
How much does a DNA test cost?
Prices vary depending on the type of test and laboratory:
- Paternity test: from 2500 to 6000 UAH.
- Genealogical test: from 3000 to 8000 UAH.
- Medical genetic test: from 4000 to 15 000 UAH.
- Prenatal DNA test: from 20,000 UAH.
- Additional services, such as anonymity or urgency, may be charged separately.
How is a DNA test taken?
Usually - through a buccal swab (cotton swab on the inside of the cheek). Other methods: blood, hair from the root, nails, or traces of DNA on things. For official results (court, notary), identification of the person and certification of the procedure are required.
How long does it take to do a DNA test?
The time it takes to perform a DNA test in Ukraine depends on the type of test and the laboratory chosen. Approximately:
- Paternity test - from 3 to 10 working days.
- Medical genetic tests - 2-4 weeks.
- Genealogical tests - up to 6 weeks.
- Prenatal DNA tests - 5-10 business days.
- Express test (for an additional fee) - sometimes possible in 1-3 days.
If the test is required for court, the time may increase due to additional formalities.
What is the purpose of each type of DNA test?
Paternity ormaternity test - to confirm or deny kinship.
Genealogical - to study roots, build a family tree, participate in genealogical databases.
Medical genetic - to identify the risks of cancer, heart disease, diet or medication.
Identification - in investigative actions, searching for relatives or the deceased.
Prenatal - checking the genetic health of the fetus without risking pregnancy.
