The Mykolaiv Regional Council has approved a decision to update the charter of the regional museum of local lore to comply with the law banning the propaganda of Russian imperial policy and the requirements for decolonizing names.
The decision was considered at a session of the Mykolaiv Regional Council.
According to Olena Boborenko, head of the regional state administration's culture department, the museum has five separate divisions, two of which have names that do not meet the requirements of the law.
In particular, it is proposed to
- to rename the Museum of the Underground and Partisan Movement in Mykolaiv Region during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1944, located in Mykolaiv on Lyahina Street, to the Mykolaiv Historical Museum with the address updated to Heroes of the Varangians Street;
- rename the Ochakiv Military History Museum named after Oleksandr Suvorov to the Ochakiv Military History Museum, removing the name of the Russian military leader from the title.
The revised draft decision and the updated draft charter were sent to the deputies by e-mail. According to the results of the vote, 35 deputies supported the decision, one abstained, and none opposed. The decision was adopted.
The council also approved the appointment of heads of several institutions, including the Regional Palace of Culture, the Philharmonic, the School of Higher Sportsmanship and two children's and youth sports schools.
Oleksandr Dobrovolsky became the new director of the Mykolaiv Regional Philharmonic, and Denys Akmanov was appointed head of the Regional Palace of Culture.
In addition, members of the regional council elected Serhiy Belobaba as director of the integrated children's and youth sports school No. 1, Oleksandr Minenko as head of another integrated sports school, and Olena Suslova as head of the school of higher sports skills.
At the previous session, two deputies resigned from their positions ahead of schedule - Svitlana Fedorova, who was elected to the council from the banned Nash Krai party, and Vladyslav Nevesely from the Servant of the People party. Fedorova stated that she no longer wanted to work with the current leadership, while Neveselyi did not give any reasons for his decision.
