The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is preparing to consider a package of bills on renaming 185 settlements as part of a large-scale process of decolonization and decommunization of Ukraine, including 25 in the southern regions.

This was announced by Roman Lozynsky, chairman of the subcommittee on decolonization.

According to him, 166 renamings are being carried out in accordance with the law on decolonization, which prohibits names glorifying Russian figures, the empire or Soviet totalitarianism, and most of the proposals for new names came from local governments.

Another 19 names were initiated by local communities on their own under the general procedure. The vast majority of new names are historical names, neutral or emphasizing national identity. The parliamentary committee is expected to submit the relevant resolutions to the Verkhovna Rada in the near future. After the vote, the new names will come into effect in accordance with the parliamentary decision.
